THE HOLY 108


                                   THE  HOLY  108   J.K. SIVAN 

We have  to chant the names of Gods and Goddess, while meditating  certain  number of times and it is invariably 108 times.   Why is this number 108 so important in our Hinduism? Why 108 is so sacred?:

To know the answer we have to learn the following facts which do have relevance to 108.

1.The diameter of the Sun is 108 times the diameter of the Earth.
2.The distance from the Sun to the Earth is 108 times the diameter of the Sun.
3.The average distance of the Moon from the Earth is 108 times the diameter of the Moon.
4. Ayurveda has 108 “Marma” points that are vital for giving life to living beings.
5. The mighty  Sri Chakra yantra intersects in 54 points each with a masculine and feminine quality, totalling in all to 108
6. Astrology  has 12 houses and 9 planets in everyone's  horoscope. multiply these. 12 x 9: 108.
7. Tantra sastra says every day we breathe 21,600 times out of which 10,800 are solar energy and 10, 800 are lunar energy. Multiplying 108 X 100 is 10,800.
8. Rishi Bharata's Natya Shastra has 108 karanas (Movement of hand and feet)
9. Sanskrit has  54 letters (aksharas)  used to describe both Sakthi and Siva.Therefore  multiply 54 x 2 arriving at 108.
10. Puranas and Upanishads are 108 each in numbe
11.  108 is known as  a Harshad number, which is an integer divisible by the sum of its digits (Harshad is from Sanskrit, and means “great joy”) here are said to be 108 earthly desires in mortals.
12.  It is surprising to  observe that  there  are 108  types of lies that humans tell. Also it is strange that 
there are 108 human delusions or forms of ignorance.
13. The chakras are the intersections of energy lines, and there are 108 energy lines converging to form the heart chakra. One of them, sushumna leads to the crown chakra (sahasrara)  and is said to be the path to Self-realization (Kundalini).
14. If a person can have control over his breathing in meditation restricting it to  only 108 breaths in a day, enlightenment (gnana) will be attained.
15.The angle formed by two adjacent lines in a pentagon equals 108 degrees.
16.It is heard that  there are 108 feelings, 36 related to the past, 36 related to the present, and balance 36 related to the future. Quite strange.
17.Astronomically, there are 12 constellations, and 9 arc segments called namshas or chandrakalas. 9 times 12 equal 108. Chandra is moon, and kalas are the divisions within a whole.
18.Geographically it is surprising to observe that the  sacred River Ganga spans a longitude of 12 degrees (79 to 91), and latitude of 9 degrees (22 to 31). 12 x  = 108.19. Krishna had 108 gopis or maid servants.
20. It is reported that there are 108 styles of meditation.Paths to God: being suggested as 108.
21.  Jainism speaks of 108 combined virtues of 5 categories of holy ones, including 12, 8, 36, 25, and 27 virtues respectively.
22.  Sikhs  use chanting  mala of 108 knots tied in a string of wool, rather than beads.
23. Buddhists carve 108 small Buddhas on a walnut for good luck. Some ring a bell 108 times to celebrate a new year.
24. There are said to be 108 virtues to cultivate and 108 defilements to avoid.
25. The Chinese Buddhists and Taoists use a 108 beads- mala, which is called su-chu, and has three dividing beads, so the mala is divided into three parts of 36 each. Chinese astrology says that there are 108 sacred stars.
26. Athma the human soul or center goes through 108 stages on the journey.
27. There are 108 qualities of praiseworthy souls.
28.In Japan, at the year end,  a bell is chimed 108 times to give farewell to the old year and welcome the new one. Each ring represents one of 108 earthly temptations a person must overcome to achieve Nirvana.
29.  There may be many more interesting facts which I am unable to collate at the moment. But  considering all the above, it may clearly be understood that 108 signifies the wholeness of the divinity, and perfect totality which our ancestors knew and followed and so should we.
