8th August 2017 - Gayathri Japam - to be performed with due sinceety and faith with due respects to our elders who taught us this to continue to do without fail and to teach the posterity too......Let us perfrorm our duty sincerely (atleast once a year...) J.K.SIVAN
Science has some astonishing facts to tell.
According to modern astrophysics and Astronomy our Galaxy, what is known as “Milky Way” or “Akash-Ganga” has about 100,000 million of stars. Each star has (like Sun) its own planet system. The moon moves round the earth and the earth moves round the sun along with the moon.
All planets go around the sun revolving around at its own axis. The Sun & its planet takes one round of the galactic centre in 22.5 crore years!! All galaxies including ours, are moving away at a terrific velocity of 20,000 miles per second.!!!!!!!!
Our ancient Rishis knew what the modern scientists find now with the help of advanced Electronic and electric gadgets. Let us see the scientific meaning of Gayathri Manthra step by step:
A) Om bhur bhuvah swah:
Bhur the earth, bhuvah the planets (solar family), swah the Galaxy. Understand that even an ordinary ceiling fan at a speed of 900 RPM (rotations Per minute) moves making noise. Imagine, what a loud noise would be when the galaxies move with a speed of 20,000 miles per second. This is what this portion of the mantra explains that the sound produced due to the fast-moving earth, planets and galaxies is Om.
“Om” sound was heard by Rishi Vishvamitra, while meditating. He revealed it to other Rishis. They all unanimously decided to call this sound “Om” as God’s name, because “Om” sound is heard eternally in Time {PAST/PRESENT/FUTURE}. Then only the idea came first, to identify God as this great sound “OM” because He has no form (Upaadhi). Gita says: "Omiti ekaksharam brahma", meaning that the name of the Supreme is Om, which contains only one syllable (8/12).
“Om” sound heard during samadhi is naadha-brahma, a big sound . Hence the rishis called this sound Udgith ( musical sound) in heaven. They also noticed that the infinite mass of galaxies moving with a velocity of 20,000 miles/second was generating a kinetic energy = 1/2 MV2 and this was balancing the total energy consumption of the cosmos. Hence they named it Pranavah, which means the body (vapu) or store house of energy (prana).
B) Tat savitur varenyam:
Tat= that (God), savitur =the sun (star), varenyam = worthy of bowing or respect. Once we know a person”s form and name, we may locate the specific person. Therefore the name and sound (upadhi) enales us identify formless God, Vishvamitra suggested. He told us that we could know (realize) the unknowable formless God through the known factors, viz., sound Om and light of suns (stars). A mathematician solves the equation x2+y2=4; if x=2; then y can be known isn’t it? An engineer measures a river’s width, standing by the river bank drawing a triangle. Similarly Vishvamitra applies the mantra in the next portion below:-
C) Bhargo devasya dheemahi:
Bhargo=the light, devasya= of the deity, dheemahi =we should meditate. The rishi instructs us to meditate upon the available form (light of suns) to discover the formless Creator (God). Also he wants us to do japa of the word Om (this is understood in the Mantra). This is how the sage wants us to proceed. But the human mind is so shaky and restless that without the grace of the Supreme (Brahma) the mind cannot be controlled. Hence Vishvamitra suggests the way to pray Him as under:
(D) Dhiyo yo nah prachodayat:
Dhiyo= (intellect), yo= (who), nah=(we all), prachodayat =(guide to right Direction). O God! Deploy our intellect on the right path.
Full scientific interpretation of the Mantra:
The earth (bhur), the planets (bhuvah), and the galaxies(swah) are moving at a very great velocity, the sound produced is Om, (the name of formless God.) That God (tat), who manifests Himself in the form of light of suns (savitur) is worthy of bowing/respect (varenyam). We all, therefore, should meditate (dheemahi) upon the light (bhargo) of that deity (devasya) and also do chanting of Om. May He (yo) guide in right direction (prachodayat) our (nah) intellect dhiyo.
Important points of Gayathri Manthra:
1) The total kinetic energy generated by the movement of galaxies acts as an umbrella and balances the total energy consumption of the cosmos. Hence named PRANAVAH(body of energy). This is equal to 1/2 mv2 (Mass of galaxies x velocity2).
2) Realising the importance of “OM” - all other religions adopted this word slightly changing accent, viz., amen and Ameen.
3) The God could be realised through the saguna (gross), upasana (method), i.e.,
a) by chanting the name of the supreme as OM and
b) by meditating upon the light emitted by stars (suns).
I give below a story written by me based on Bhagvan Ramana Maharshi ‘s teaching earlier in Tamil, for the benefit of those who cannot read Tamil:
Once there was a king who had a wise and pious minister. The King liked him and consulted him for all his decisions and actions. One day the king needed the consultation of his minister and rushed to the residence of the minister.
He was received and informed by the minister's wife that the minister was in a closed room praying and meditating. The king sat on a chair awaiting the minister to return from the closed room,
The minister came out and paid his respects to the king hen the latter asked ''what were you meditating upon?''
''Gayathri manthra''
''what is it ? ''
''It is a great manthra, the queen of all manthras, you majesty''
''Why dont you teach me that Gayathri manthra''
''Maharaja, I am sorry, I am not competent to teach you that. It has to be obtained from a qualified Guru''
The king found someone to teach him the Gayathri manthra and learnt it and one evening he surprisingly called on the minister at his house again.
The minister received the king with all respects and seated him on a swinging chair .
''Dear Minister, you did not teach me the Gayathri Manthra, but I have learnt it from another man. It is so simple, let me recite it to you to show that I know it now''. So saying, the king the casually sat on the swinging chair and recited aloud the manthra.
Now tell me is it alright.?
The minister hesitated for a minute and replied with all respects to his king: The manthra letters and words expressed by you is alright, but it is not the way to chant it as it will not be effective.''
''Come on tell me why the manthra will not be effective when I say it?'' The king was angry in fact.
The old pious minister hesitated for a second and then ordered the king's servant in his house in a commanding voice '' Hei soldier come here quickly. Take that rope and tie it around the king and bind him to the pillar here''
The soldier was shocked and did not move. Nor was the king to such a behaviour from the minister.
The minister again shouted at the soldier servant angrily ''Are you deaf you stupid soldier, come quickly with the rope and tie the king to this pillar''
Again there was no response from the soldier.
The king was very angry now and he ordered the soldier ''You rascal what are you doing there keeping quiet, bring that rope and tie it around this wicked minister and take him to the court. I shall give him the deserving punishment for this behaviour''
Within lightning moment the soldier held the old minister, bound hiim with the rope and began pushing him out to take him to the court.
The minister then laughed which irritated and shocked the king
''What is wrong with you, Are you mad?. Instead of repenting for your wicked act and crying, you are laughing heartily''
The minister replied the king '' Maharaja, it was the answer to your question. That is why I laughed ''
'What do you mean you, wretched man?''
''Oh king, my master, please think over this properly. I gave an order to this soldier, more than once, he did not respond. When you ordered the same, he reacted and obeyed effectively. The words and command were one and same but when you said it, it became effective''. Likewise. the Gayathri manthra should be chanted with due righteousness, respect and devotion when it will give the desired benefit. It has to be chanted properly befitting its sacredness and power.
The king realised and the minister was set free.'
